Pioneers dominate Riverside in softball duo

Both games were called on the mercy rule as the Pioneers cruised to the doubleheader sweep.

MILTON-FREEWATER - Visiting Riverside never stood a chance against Mac-Hi in the season-opening softball doubleheader for both schools Tuesday afternoon at Yantis Park.

The Pioneers scored twice in each of the first three innings and added six more runs in the fourth frame of the opener - which ended in their favor, 12-1.

Mac-Hi tallied four runs in inning one and six more in the second stanza of the nightcap while cruising to a 12-0 triumph.

Both games were called after four-and-a-half innings due to the mercy rule.

Shawney Garcia pitched a two-hitter in game one and struck out three for Mac-Hi. Teammate Kaitlin Erm scattered five hits in the second game and fanned four.

Defensively, the Pioneers played errorless ball behind their two hurlers.

"That allows our pitchers to relax - when they know the defense is behind them," a satisfied Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said afterward. "They did a great job for the most part. Everything was working."

Mac-Hi's first-inning runs in game one came across on bloop singles by Stefanie Baker and Garcia.

Baker lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored not one, but two runs, in the second as the Pioneers doubled their lead to 4-0.

After scoring a pair in the third inning on a botched pickle between third base and home plate, Lauren Sams stroked an RBI single to center and Garcia ripped a run-scoring triple to highlight the six-run fourth inning.

Baker, Garcia and Kalyn Odman had two hits apiece in the game for Mac-Hi.

In the second inning of game two, Belen Betancourt and Odman drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to push the Pioneers' lead to 6-0.

Brittney Hall tomahawked a three-RBI double to right-center moments later to make it 9-0.

Baker delivered a two-out, RBI hit to left in the fourth.

Andrea Roeder led Mac-Hi with three hits in Tuesday's finale and Baker socked two more.

"We had a lot of runners on - which is good," Christian said. "To put (at least) 10 runs up in both games (means) we're doing something right."

The Pioneers host Weston-McEwen Saturday at 1 p.m.
