PENDLETON - Good pitching and timely hitting paced Wa-Hi to a 5-1 season-opening non-conference softball victory over Pendleton here Tuesday afternoon.
Blue Devil pitchers Hope Klicker and Alyson Ambler combined for a four-hitter and allowed no earned runs in the victory.
Klicker worked four innings in the mound, fanned five Buckaroos and hit one. The unearned run scored in the fourth frame.
Ambler finished the final three scoreless innings, fanning four and walking one.
Six Blue Devils, led by two hits each from Jill McDaniel and Andrea Hamada, hit safely in the game.
Hamada slugged a triple and a double and knocked in two runs. McDaniel stung pitches for a single and a double, knocked in a run and scored two tuns.
Catcher Vickie Reardon reached base three times in four appearances at the plate with a pair of walks and a single.
"Hope and Alyson pitched well, and we spread the hits around the lineup," Wa-Hi coach Jerry Humphreys said. "It's nice to start the season with a win."
The Blue Devils participate in a jamboree on Saturday and open the Big Nine Conference Cascade Division season with a Murr Sports Complex twinbill against Pasco at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
