Voters to decide season for Prescott Pool

If approved April 27, a levy would pay for operation of the pool this year and next.

PRESCOTT -- There's still hope for a splash-down at the Prescott Pool this summer

Whether the pool will open depends on the outcome of a special election April 27 seeking a $220,000 maintenance and operation levy.

The Prescott Joint Park and Recreation District board decided at its last meeting to seek the levy to fund the operation of the pool and Fieldview Park for 2010 and 2011.

The summer looked bleak and hot for kids in the Prescott area when votes missed the mark with a 59.22 percent approval of a $160,000 levy measure in the November 2009 election. A supermajority of 60 percent is required for passage.

If the levy is approved, it will be collected in the 2011 tax year. The district would ask for a tax anticipation note from the county so the pool will be able to open in June this year and operate for the summer.

This special election is the last chance the district has to secure funding in time to provide services for 2010.

The district encompasses the same area as the Prescott School District and is in Walla Walla and Columbia counties.

District commissioners will hold a public forum April 1 at 7 p.m. to answer questions and provide information about the levy. The forum will be in the Prescott Lions Hall.
