WALLA WALLA - With the season less than 90 days away, the Walla Walla Sweets are putting the final touches on the inaugural season roster. Two versatile players from a pair of the top baseball schools in the country have agreed to contracts to play for the Sweets, said Zachary Fraser, the Sweets general manager.

Dennis Holt, an outfielder and left-handed pitcher from UCLA (currently No. 15 in the NCAA rankings) and John Rohde, a right-hand pitcher from Lewis-Clark State (pre-season No. 6 in the NAIA rankings), who was an all-conference player as an outfielder as a junior college athlete, will make their home in the Walla Walla Valley this summer.

"Dennis and John are talented players, both on the mound and at the plate," Fraser said. "We expect both to make major contributions on the field, and to provide J.C. with versatility at the plate."

The versatility comes into play as both Holt and Rohde are accomplished at the plate as well as their abilities on the mound. Holt is currently hitting .667 with the Bruins, as he is a valuable bat off the bench for undefeated UCLA. Rohde was a first-team NWAACC all-conference performer, where he hit .398 last season at Treasure Valley Community College as an outfielder and designated hitter. Both players will be listed as pitchers for the Sweets.

Holt, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound freshman from Yorba Linda, Calif., was an All-Sunset League performer at Esperanza High School. He also was named to the Orange County (Calif.) All-Star team and the National Classic All-Tournament team as a senior.

Rohde, a 6-foot, 205-pound junior from Lewiston, was a 2007 graduate of Lewiston High School. He helped lead Lewiston High to an Idaho state title his junior year, and was an all-Inland Empire performer his last two seasons. He currently is redshirting for the Warriors in 2010.

The Sweets, an expansion franchise in the West Coast League, open the 2010 season by hosting defending league champion Wenatchee AppleSox at Borleske Stadium on June 8.
