Wolves split with Chukars

The WWU softball team wins the opener against Treasure Valley, 2-1, before falling in the nightcap, 7-2.

ONTARIO, Ore. - With Andrea Pedro and Elizabeth Jones leading the way in the first game, Walla Walla University split a non-conference softball doubleheader with Treasure Valley Community College here on Thursday.

Pedro pitched a complete-game seven-hitter, and Jones knocked in two runs to give the Wolves a 2-1 victory in the opener.

The Wolves lost the second game, 7-2.

The Wolves loaded the bases with one out in the first inning of the opener, and a base hit by Jones plated all the runs Pedro would need.

Pedro fanned six and walked none to book the win.

"We should have taken a greater advantage of having the bases loaded in the first inning," WWU coach Mike Jemenez said. "But Andrea kept them off balance for the entire game. She had a great outing.

"They had a leadoff double and a stolen base in the seventh inning," Jemenez said. "But Andrea got the next three outs, including a final strikeout with a full count."

Tara Talbot had three hits for Treasure Valley in the opener, and Erin Christman had four hits for the Chukars in the nightcap.

In the second game, Wolves' starting pitcher Ashley Martinez left the game after a pulled leg muscle while batting.

Chelsea Aka finished the game in relief and earned plaudits from Jemenez.

"Chelsea did a good job," he said. "She's young and experienced, but she pitched very well. We had four errors and some walks, and they took advantage."

WWU, 3-6, plays a twin bill against Boise State University's club team in Boise today at 2 p.m.
