WALLA WALLA - DeSales overcame a 4-1 deficit in the opener of a non-conference baseball doubleheader here at Ray Lane Field Friday.
Behind the pitching and hitting of Victor Mata, the Irish stormed back to defeat La Salle 9-5 in game one.
DeSales got a two-hit, five-inning shutout from Pat Richard to win the nightcap, 10-0.
"We didn't get off to a good start," DeSales coach Kim Cox said. "We dug a hole for ourselves. I was pleased that we kept our attention and got an opportunity to score and hit some balls."
Mata came on in relief of Irish starter Matt Wujek with the bases loaded and two outs in the third. After walking in a run to give La Salle a 4-1 lead, Mata got a strikeout to end the Lightning threat.
Mata allowed one hit and one unearned run while striking out seven the rest of the way.
On the offensive side, Mata doubled to lead off the Irish second and Spencer Cordeiro's sac-fly to center plated Mata with the first Irish run.
Mata's third-inning double plated Richard, who had singled with one out, for the second Irish tally.
After walks to Tommy Gregg, Wujek, and Richard in a four-run Irish fourth, Mata's third double of the game cleared the bases as DeSales took a 7-4 lead.
Mata ripped a solo home run just inside the left field foul pole in the sixth to plate DeSales' last run.
"Victor had a good offensive day," Cox said. "To Vic's credit, he's been working hard. He has a tendency to hook balls down the line and they are all foul. This one (today) was straight."
Mata's four hits and five RBIs, Gregg's two hits, and Richard's two paced a 12-hit Irish attack.
Beside a single and a double from Alec Boyle, Richard was in charge in the second game.
After Boyle's third-inning double, Richard retired the last seven Lightning hitters in a row, including the last four by strikeout.
"Pat threw well," Cox said. "Both Victor and Pat were very efficient (on the mound). They located great and kept (their) pitch counts low."
The Irish went to the bottom of the third locked in a 0-0 tie. Freshman Logan Hoeft got the Irish started with a lead off double, and two wild pitches later, the Irish had the lead for good at 1-0.
Richard added a two-out run-scoring double and the Irish led 2-0 after three.
DeSales put game two away with a four-run third highlighted by two freshman, as Brandon Arellano had an RBI double and Hoeft added a run-scoring single.
Richard's fifth-inning two-run single plated the 10th Irish run and ended the contest.
Richard with three hits, Wujek with two, and Hoeft with two led the Irish 10-hit attack in the nightcap.
DeSales improves to 2-1 on the season and opens Southeast 2B league play at Asotin Tuesday.
