JOHN DAY, Ore. — Mac-Hi pounded out 30 hits, while Pioneer starting pitchers punched out 22 batters, in sweeping a pair of non-conference baseball games Friday and Saturday at the John Day Ice Breaker Tournament here. Mac-Hi beat La Pine, 12-3, and Dufur, 15-3.

Friday’s game pitted the Pioneers against La Pine. The game was a 1-1 pitchers’ duel through four innings until Mac-Hi’s offense got unleashed with a four-run fifth inning highlighted by Ryley Croghan’s leadoff homer.

La Pine got two back in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the lead to 5-3, but Mac-Hi exploded for seven runs in the seventh to put the game away.

"In the seventh we just started teeing off," Mac-Hi coach Craig Angell. "(Jake) Knight hit a leadoff single, Croghan homered him in. (Nick) Watts got on, then (Patrick) Sheets homered him in, than (Randy) Romero knocked two more in.

"Once the hits started coming there was no stopping."

Croghan struck out 13 in 5 2/3 innings.

"This is Croghan’s first time on the mound this year," Angell said. "He’s been the catcher all his career. But we needed Ryley to pitch this year, so we brought up sophomore Willie McCoy to catch and they worked great together."

Mac-Hi took Saturday’s game against Dufur by a similar score, but in a shorter time period. The Pioneers beat Dufur 15-3 in a game stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Randy Romero struck out nine in four innings with no earned runs charged to his name.

The Pioneers struck for 10 runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth to account for all 15 of their runs.

"It took us the first couple innings to get used to that pitcher (Dufur’s Tanner Phetteplace)," Angell said. "By the second time through the order we’d seen enough of his pitches to score 10 runs on nine hits."

Mac-Hi pounded out eight doubles in the game.

"Once we get going it takes a bit to slow us down. This is the third game in a row that this (scoring in bunches) has happened," Angell said.

Mac-Hi is now 3-0 on the season. The Pioneers host Touchet on Tuesday, and travel to Elgin Saturday.
