KENNEWICK - Wa-Hi's Drew Reinland shot a par 65 to nail medalist honors at the 22-team Tri-Cities Invite prep golf tournament on the Tri-Cities Country Club course here Friday.
Reinland's 65, and his second-consecutive invite victory in two outings, helped the Blue Devils place 11th at the event, which featured teams from Oregon, Idaho and Washington.
Wa-Hi's individual scorers were Reinland 65, Travis Morrison 81, Nick Atwood 84 and Dean Atkinson 85.
Wa-Hi's Jake Hanson disqualified himself when he discovered he had mis-applied a rule on the final hole.
"I'm proud of Jake," Wa-Hi coach Jim Smith said. "He did what golfers do when he discovered the mistake. He didn't have to say anything, and his score could have moved us up a notch or two.
"He had a good round going, at 1-over par on the last hole," Smith said. "Then he had a couple of rough shots, and he hit the ball when taking a practice swing.
"He wasn't sure of the rule and ended up playing the ball, which was a mistake," Smith said. "As soon as he clarified the rule, he went to the officials and explained what happened. He did the right thing, and I'm proud of him."
Smith also praised Reinland's play.
"Drew is Drew," Smith said. "He went over there with the idea of winning it, and he did. I think Drew is the guy to beat in our league this year."
And Smith praised his three freshman golfers: Morrison, Atwood and Atkinson.
"If you've never played that course, it's really tough," Smith said. "So their scores are very respectable. I would have been pleased for them to break 90.
"Obviously, we have a long way to go, but I'm pleased with their scores," he added.
The top team scores at the event were Richland 276, Southridge 280, Hanford 287, Corvallis 290, Kamiakin 293, Lewiston 293, Mount Spokane 293, Ferris 302, Kennewick 310, Mead 310 and Wa-Hi placed 11th with a 315 total.
Wa-Hi returns to action on Wednesday with a 1 p.m. Big Nine Conference pod match at Hanford, on the Horn Rapids course.
