Roderick MacDonald

Roderick "Rod" MacDonald, 84, died March 23, 2010, at Washington Odd Fellows Home. Rod was born Sept. 30, 1925, to Samuel and Josephine Yack MacDonald in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. He graduated in 1943 from St. Vincent's Academy in Walla Walla. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a pharmacist's mate. On VJ day, he met Katherine Pernici in Los Angeles. They were married June 29, 1947. He later attended Washington State University, earning a B.S. in pharmacy in 1950. After starting his working career as a pharmacist in Pasco, he returned to Walla Walla in 1958, serving for many years as both pharmacist and manager of Payless Drug when it was on Main Street. He was a long time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Rod is survived by his wife, Katie; children, Michael MacDonald, Lake Ridge, Va., Rosanne Cabinian, Grayslake, Ill., Chris MacDonald, Seattle, John MacDonald, Wenatchee, Anita Burrows, Heppner, Ore., and Gina Bowman of Spokane. He had 11 grandchildren, Joanna, Adam, Deanna, Sara, Kelly, Brett, Vanessa, Katie, Bryn, Amy and Eileen. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Hart.
Visitation will be Friday, March 26, 2010, from 3 p.m. until the Rosary service begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be 9:30 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2010, at St. Patrick's Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent De Paul or DeSales High School.
