Wa-Hi boys golfers fifth at Big Nine pod

HANFORD - Wa-Hi's boys shot a 317 team score to place fifth at the 16-team Big Nine Conference pod match at the Horn Rapids Golf Course here on Wednesday.

Richland recorded the top team score of 305 for the day.

Spencer Ellis of Eastmont shot a 1-under-par 71 for the day's medalist honors.

Drew Reinland carded a 77 to lead the Blue Devils and tie for 14th place in the 88-player field.

Wa-Hi's other scorers included Jake Hanson and Travis Morrison with a pair of 78s.

Wa-Hi's Dean Atkinson and Nick Atwood shot 84 and 85, respectively.

Brandon Kaup shot a 90 on the day.

The overall team scores for the event were Richland 305, Hanford 310, Southridge 310, West Valley 314, Walla Walla 317, Kamiakin 320, Eastmont 331, Kennewick 338, Pasco 339, Wenatchee 348, Moses Lake 350, Davis 396, Sunnyside 421, Eisenhower 434, Chiawana incomplete.

"I was real pleased with fifth at Horn Rapids," Wa-Hi coach Jim Smith said. "We took three freshmen who had either not played the course, or had played it once."

Morrison's 78 "was huge for us and him," Smith said.

"Drew (Reinland) struggled with the course a little bit, he just doesn't like it," Smith said. "But he hung in and battled and we got a good finish out of the whole thing."

Smith said Hanson recorded his 78 with a sprained ankle.

"It was the first time in 20 years of coaching golf I've had to tape an ankle," Smith said. "He had a good round."

Wa-Hi has its alumni fundraiser Friday at Walla Walla Country Club. Tee times are from noon to 3 p.m., with money raised helping the Blue Devil boys and girls golf teams.
