WALLA WALLA - Whitman College senior Matt Solomon has been named Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for men's tennis for a second straight week.
Solomon, who plays No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and his Whitman teammates were busy last week, playing a string of six matches in six days, ending on Sunday.
Solomon got started early in the week with a 6-2, 6-2 singles victory over Linfield's Mark Magdaong. Whitman won the team match by a 7-2 score, solidifying its hold on first place in the conference while handing Linfield its first NWC loss of the season.
After shutting out Pacific the next day (with Solomon notching decisive victories in singles and doubles), Whitman headed to California for a series of matches against other nationally-ranked teams.
Solomon capped his week on Sunday with 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Brian Pybas of UC-Santa Cruz. In the most recent West Region rankings, Pybas was ranked No. 3 in singles, eight spots ahead of Solomon.
