Ellen Elizabeth Middleton of Lewiston and formerly of Walla Walla, Washington, passed away Tuesday, 87. She was born to Emma and Earl Shiplett March 16, 2010, in Lewiston at the age in Deer Lodge, Montana, on July 15, 1922; she was one of five children raised largely on a Montana ranch. Ellen and her family enjoyed music widely, with many musical gatherings culminating in their home outside Deer Lodge.
During Ellen's high school years, Ellen was an accomplished diver and scholar. Throughout life, she enjoyed ice skating on frozen ponds, hay rides, hummingbirds, gardening, flowers, family picnics and the occasional card game.
Ellen married Benjamin B. Middleton, Jr. from Anaconda, Montana, on December 27, 1940.
On an early date, Ben held his arm out to Ellen and said, "You like chicken? Grab a wing!" they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1990 at the family cabin in Montana.
Ellen served on many church committees, and her neighborly ways could always be counted on for or cookies or a fresh pan of homemade macaroni and cheese. Ellen always had a smile, no matter what the circumstance or history.
Ellen moved to Lewiston, Idaho, in 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, and her four siblings. She is survived by her children: David Middleton of Colfax, Washington; Karen and Bud Van Stone of Lewiston, Idaho; Christina Middleton of Walla Walla, Washington. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the congregational Presbyterian Church in Lewiston, Idaho, on April 10, 2010, at 1pm. the family suggests memorials be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Walla Walla, Washington, or the Parkinson's Foundation.
