BEAUMONT, Calif - Playing on a demanding course, senior Steve Campbell shot 83 to lead Whitman College to a second-place tie in a three-way 18-hole match against a pair of NAIA schools on Friday here at the East Valley Golf Club.

Whitman's team score for its top four was 341, which tied the Missionaries for second with California Baptist. Biola was first in the team scoring with a 320 total.

"The scores were high all the way around, but this was a very tough, demanding course," Whitman men's coach Peter McClure said. "We played pretty well given the toughness of the course."

Sophomore John Abercrombie shot 85 for Whitman's next-best score. Freshmen Peter Clark and Geoff Burks rounded out the team score with scores of 86 and 87, respectively.

Bradley Strezelczyk, a senior at Cal Baptist, shot 77 for the day's low score.

Whitman plays in the Northwest Conference Northern Colleges Tournament at the Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.
