Dorothy Harrigan of Walla Walla passed away on March 26, 2010, at the age of 90. A memorial funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 10 a.m. Those who wish may make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association in Dorothy's memory through Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 West Alder, Walla Walla, WA., 99362.
Dorothy was born on August 4, 1919, in Seattle to Clifford and Lillie Wiles. She graduated from Lincoln High School and earned a bachelors of science degree in nursing from Seattle University. She then earned a certificate in public health from the University of Washington. Years later, she earned a masters degree in nursing education from Walla Walla University.
Dorothy enjoyed a long and distinguished career as both a nurse caregiver and educator. After moving to Walla Walla in 1955, Mrs. Harrigan served as the Director of Nursing Education at St. Mary Hospital. She later taught nursing at Walla Walla Community College where she was employed until her retirement in 1981.
In 1943 Dorothy married Jerry Harrigan. They raised four sons together. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, bird watching, skiing, fishing and traveling. Following her retirement, Jerry and Dorothy traveled extensively throughout the United States and internationally.
Mrs. Harrigan will be remembered by her family, colleagues, students and friends for her independence, dignity, grace, dedication, intellect, kindness and her love o music and the arts.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry; brother, John Wiles of Seattle; sister, Mildred Mann of New Orleans; sons, Craig and Rachel Harrigan of Milton-Freewater, Patrick and Marietta Harrigan of Seattle, Brian Harrigan of Boise, and Sean and Kathy Harrigan of Corona, Calif; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
