POMEROY - Pomeroy pushed across 12 runs before the spring weather hit here Saturday in girls non-league softball action.
The Pirates defeated Grangeville, 12-9, in a storm-shortened opener of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was postponed due to the weather.
The Pirates took advantage of 12 walks to earn the win.
Pomeroy scored four in the first to take control and iced it with a six-spot in the fourth. Mackenzie Monahan and Karlie Martin each had two-run singles in the six-run uprising. McKenzie Paul blasted a two-run home run for Grangeville in the top of the fifth, but Haylee Koller, in the circle, rose to the occasion and stopped the Grangeville rally.
"Haylee, with five strikeouts, pitched well," Pirate coach Rob Monahan said. "We took advantage of 12 walks and got some big hits."
The Pirates answered the Grangeville's mini fifth-inning rally with three runs in the bottom of the fifth before the thunder, lightning and hail washed out the rest of the softball afternoon.
By rule, the score went back as it was after the top of the fifth.
Koller and Kindsey Bott collected the other Pomeroy hits as the Pirates made the most of their four hits.
Pomeroy improves to 4-9 and will host Lacrosse-Washtucna at 2:30 Tuesday.
