SPOKANE - After getting roughed up 15-2 in game one, Whitman College put up a better fight in Saturday's nightcap, falling 8-4 to complete a Northwest Conference baseball twinbill.
The two teams play a single game at noon today to complete their weekend series and put a wrap on their spring seasons.
Whitman took an early 2-1 lead in the second game, after scoring single runs in the second and third innings. Eric Tolleson doubled and scored the first Missionary run when Joe Rodhouse rapped a single to left field. Mitch Hannoosh then singled to open the third inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Erik Korsmo ripped another double to left.
Korsmo, who started on the mound for Whitman, surrendered a one-out walk in the bottom of the third but then picked the runner off first base. After a second walk, an infield error opened the gates for three unearned runs, giving the Pirates a 4-2 lead.
Whitworth stretched its lead to 6-2 with two more two-out runs in the fourth frame.
Two Pirate errors in the top of the fifth led to a Whitman run in the top of the fifth, trimming Whitworth's advantage to 6-3.
The Missionaries threatened again in the eighth. Jay Richards and Tolleson poked one-out singles, but relief pitcher Ben George got the next hitter to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Down 8-3, Whitman tacked on a final run in the ninth. Jason Sease led off with a single, moved around to third base on a groundout and a Pirate error, and scored when Justin Weeks grounded out to third.
Tolleson and Sease had two hits apiece to pace Whitman's game-two offense. Freshman John Nortz tossed the final four innings for the Missionaries, scattering five hits.
Whitworth's Landon Scott, who leads the NWC in hitting, homered and finished the game with three hits and four RBI for the Pirates.
In game one, Whitworth did most of its damage in the third and fourth innings, scoring a total of 11 runs on 10 hits. Scott also homered in the opener and was one of four Pirates with three hits.
Whitman scored its first run in the seventh inning. Korsmo singled and scored on Mercado's double to right-center.
In the Missionary ninth, Tolleson singled and Korsmo was by a pitch. After Mercado lined into a third-to-first doubleplay, Sease drilled an RBI-single into center.
It was the 15th time Korsmo has been hit with a pitch this season. That number leads the conference.
Sease and Mercado collected two hits apiece for Whitman in the opener.
Whitworth heads to Sunday's finale with a season record of 12-27 (9-14 NWC). Whitman is 5-33 and 4-19.
