POMEROY - A couple of youthful baseball teams with an eye on the future wrapped up their 2010 seasons here Tuesday by splitting a non-league doubleheader.
Host Pomeroy claimed the opener 24-11 in five innings, just the second victory of the season for the Pirates, and visiting Lacrosse-Washtucna came back to capture the nightcap 19-6 for its first and only victory of the campaign.
"This was good for both programs," Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer said. "I think we both ended the season on a positive note."
The Pirates' 16-player varsity roster includes just three seniors and two juniors. Three sophomores, five freshmen and a trio of eighth-graders round out the squad.
"And those three eighth-graders accounted for seven of Pomeroy's 18 hits in the first game," Boyer noted. Cody LaMunyan contributed three singles, drove in three runs and scored four times; Alex Koberstein added two singles, four RBIs and a pair of runs; and Riley Bott chipped in with two singles and three runs scored.
"This is a young team, and I think we made huge improvements singe the beginning of the season," Boyer said. "We have a lot of young kids playing a varsity schedule, and I think a couple of years down the road they are going to be really, really tough.
"And Lacrosse-Washtucna is very young as well," Boyer added. "They have very few upperclassmen and are mostly freshmen and sophomores. They are going to be a lot like us in a couple of years - very tough to beat."
Ryan Smith had four singles and four runs batted in for the Pirates in the first game and added two more hits in the nightcap. Sean Beale and LaMunyan had four hits each on the day and Matt FitzGerald and Koberstein finished with three hits each.
For L-W, Darcey Stamper had four hits in the opener and two more in the second game.
