Wa-Hi boys handle Chiawana on tennis courts


WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's boys tennis team took a 6-1 victory from visiting Chiawana Tuesday.

Blake Rowley had a three-set battle with Jose Mendoza at No. 2 singles to open a string of six Blue Devil victories.

""It's been quite awhile since I've seen a match quite as close and lengthy as Blake's two-and-a-half-hour marathon win over the Riverhawks' No. 2 man, Jose Mendoza," Wa-Hi coach Ted Cummings said. "There were so many momentum shifts throughout, but Blake found a way to endure and win.

"His teammates learned a lesson about ‘just competing' from that competitive sophomore," he said. "Jack Crouter and Kevin Leier put out a pounding in No. 3 and No. 4 singles with some pretty powerful play. This might prove to be our best lineup for the remainder of the season during dual match play."

Crouter downed Howard Durrant, and Leier beat Eric Garcia, both in straight sets. Wa-Hi's three doubles teams then handled their Riverhawks foes.

"The doubles teams performed well today and a new player executed a thrilling debut in his first varsity match - Parker Postlewait with Ruben Kuznetsov in No. 3 doubles," Cummings said. "Parker has around a 6-foot, 6-inch wingspan and is tough to pass when he's at the net.

"We're in the midst of a stretch of five matches in five days, so we'll see how the ‘fire' holds up in the young men, but I wouldn't bet against the guys over the next few matches at Southridge (today) and hosting Ike on Thursday."
