WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's girls tennis team sent Chiawana home with a 6-1 loss Tuesday.

"It was nice to play tennis in tennis weather for a change," Blue Devil coach Keven Peck said. "By the end of our first sets, the wind had calmed down and the sun had come out. I think the girls played a little better knowing they were battling their opponents more than the elements.

"In our singles play, Tianna Cummings, Claire Konen and Kristine Leier were extremely tough," Peck said.

Cummings won 6-1, 6-0. Konen won 6-0, 6-0.

"Kristine used the experience she gained from the Yakima Invite to pull out an important win for her - and for us - 6-4, 6-2," Peck said.

Shelly Osborn and Chantel Desjarlais defeated Chiawana's Roxy Stapleton and Shanita Hill, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2, freshmen duo Allison Mehn and Rosa Tobin won 6-0, 6-0 win. Mary Felt and Monica Torres completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Wa-Hi travels to Southridge today before hosting Eisenhower Thursday.

"All the girls played solid tennis today," Peck said. "We are not blowing this out of proportion, however. Chiawana is a young tennis program and is going through its growing stages. We will face a much more determined and skilled opponent tomorrow when we visit Southridge. How we fare against Southridge will be a much better measure of where we are in the league and what we can expect come district time."
