KENNEWICK - Wa-Hi's boys tennis team took a 7-0 tennis tournament victory from Southridge here Wednesday. The win moves the Blue Devils to 6-4 overall.
"We've got a little win streak going in the Big Nine, with a chance of a third straight with a win over Eisenhower on Thursday," said Wa-Hi coach Ted Cummings. "The boys really came out with some pre-match intensity in the warmup, so it looked like another great day of tennis for the Blue Devils was in store."
Every boy on the Wa-Hi roster garnered victories.
In singles, team captain Cameron Davis had to come from behind to do it.
"He rallied at the end of the first set from 4-5 for a 7-5 win, Cummings said. "He did the same thing after being down 1-5, with six consecutive games won in the second set to clinch the first team point in the No. 1 singles position."
Jack Crouter, Blake Rowley and Kevin Leier finished the singles sweep.
In doubles, No. 2 team Brendan McKinney and Danny Wilson had Wa-Hi's only defeat of the day, losing the first set 2-6 to Southridge's Kendall Marrott and Dauson Larabee. But McKinney and Wilson rallied for 6-4, 6-4 wins.
"They shook off a first-set loss to control play from the net," Cummings said. "They are now convinced that the ‘party is at the net' as far as having fun and winning goes."
That could be said for the whole team.
"The team is really performing well and most of the kinks are gone," Cummings said. "It's a pleasure to work with such dedicated kids."
Wa-Hi hosts Eisenhower at 3 p.m. today.
