Dayton sweeps Garfield-Palouse in softball doubleheader

GARFIELD - Dayton swept a softball doubleheader away from Garfield-Palouse, 10-0 and 11-9, Saturday afternoon.

Dayton's Kayla Turner pitched a six-inning shutout and allowed one hit in game one. Turner struck out five and walked none.

"Kayla Turner pitched really well in game one," Dayton coach Desirae Jones said. "We played good defense behind her."

Madeline Jensen led the offensive attack in game one for Dayton with three hits.

Jessica Tate and Katie Varney added two hits apiece.

Game two was more competitive with the score, 11-9 Bulldogs. The back-and-forth slugfest featured a lot of clutch hitting by the Bulldogs, Jones said.

Tate had two-run double in the fifth for Dayton, followed by a 2-run homer by McKayla Bickelhaupt in the sixth.

Mieke Masselink put Dayton ahead for good in the seventh with a two-run triple. She was knocked home on a double by Sam Harting.

"The Gar-Pal girls came ready to hit and really rallied," Jones said. "But our girls really stepped up and hit the ball well, too. The girls never gave up."

Dayton's 2B league record is now 8-2. The Bulldogs play their final league games at 3 p.m. Tuesday, hosting DeSales.

The Bulldogs are currently in third place in the Southeast 2B League.
