BANDON, Ore. - Walla Walla Community College's men had three golfers card 74s on the par-71 Pacific Dunes course to boost the Warriors into second place at the Southwestern Oregon Invitational here Sunday.
Mike Noreen, Jeff Neher and Daniel Morgan were five strokes off the pace of Bellevue's Alex Mroz's field-leading 69.
Cory Spencer's 80 was the fourth counting score for WWCC, which trails Fraser Valley's team score of 299 at 302. Bellevue is third at 303, Skagit Valley follows at 307, Olympic at 311, Columbia Basin 319, Southwestern Oregon 323 and Grays Harbor at 367.
Other WWCC golfers were Michael Ervin, 83; Marcus Kilthau 78; and Max Levitch 78.
"The guys played themselves into contention," WWCC coach Mike Rostollan said, as the men headed to the Bandon Dunes coarse for the second round today.
Rostollan said Sunday's beautiful weather was replaced by rain today.
"We'll give it the old college try," he said.
On the women's side, WWCC's Dona Dunovant was in second place at 81, one stroke behind Green River's Annie Viola after playing the par-72 Bandon Dunes course Sunday.
"Dona's got a shot," Rostollan said.
Other Warrior women are Jordan Simpkins at 102 and Jamie Robison at 110.
Green River leads the women's team scores at 242, followed by Spokane at 256, Bellevue 279, Southwestern Oregon 280, WWCC 293, Centralia 297 and Columbia Basin 341.
The women headed to Pacific Dunes today.
