SUNNYSIDE - Sometimes, one run is enough to win a softball game.
Sometimes, it's not.
For the DeSales girls, it was one of each here in a non-league twin bill Tuesday.
The Irish beat Sunnyside Christian, 1-0, in the first game, but lost the nightcap, 3-1.
DeSales' pitcher Ashlyn Lyons allowed the Knights two hits in game one. She struck out nine.
Sunnyside Christian pitcher Ashley Haak struck out four and allowed four hits, but solid defense behind her kept the score low.
"Both pitchers pitched well in that first game," said DeSales coach Russ Vera.
The only run of the game was scored by Lexi Zander. Zander single, stole second and moved to third on a ground-out by Amy Arnzen. Janelle Hartford hit her home.
Game two was a similar story, but with more hits.
DeSales also had more errors.
"If we hadn't committed those four errors, they wouldn't have been able to score what basically was two extra runs," Vera said. "You've got to give credit to Sunnyside - they capitalize on our errors and were able to pull out a close game."
DeSales' run was scored by Ali Zander. She singled, moved to second on a passed ball, moved to third on a single by Michele Prior and came home on a hit by Megan Hamada.
DeSales remains 12-0 in league. The split moves them to 15-5 in nonleague action.
"The games helped get us ready for the district tournament next week," Vera said. "Those were our last two games of the season and the last chance for us to get prepared and work on some things."
DeSales is the No. 1 seed heading into districts. On May 21, the Irish play the winner of the No. 3-No. 6 seed game next Tuesday.
