Figure skaters at the Walla Walla YWCA Ice Chalet ended their season on a victorious note. They won 14 first-place and two second-place medals on May 1 at the Sherwood Spring Classic competition in suburban Portland.

There skaters could show off their spins and jumps. Ranging in age from age 9 to adult, the skaters are Sierra Meyer, Savannah Walker, Mariah Hofer, Marie Clifford and Rick Laughlin.

Ice Chalet Coach Jodi Alden was pleased. "My skaters worked hard on their programs," she said. "I love them, but some days they look like spiders on roller skates. We need to enter competitions to stay motivated to improve and perfect skills."

Their efforts paid off, Jodi said. "They skated amazingly well. I always expect a lot from my skaters and they surprised even me -- and I've seen it all.

"I'll tell you one thing, we made a huge impression on the judges and other coaches."

Skaters Mariah and Savannah earned scholarships from the Walla Walla Figure Skating Club to help defray the costs of traveling to competition.
