WALLA WALLA - The Whitman College men's tennis team, making its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III national championship tournament, is headed to southern California for the start of regional play.
Whitman, 20-4 on the season and ranked No. 22 nationally, plays Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) at 11 a.m. Thursday as part of a four-team regional in Claremont, Calif.
CMS, the host school, is 19-4 on the season and ranked No. 3 nationally.
Thursday's other match features two more teams perched high in the national rankings: No. 4 Cal Lutheran (19-2) and No. 6 UC-Santa Cruz (15-7), the defending national champion.
Winners of the two matches advance to play on Friday for a berth at the eight-team national finals, which get underway May 25 at Ohio's Oberlin College.
