WALLA WALLA - DeSales, Asotin, and Waitsburg-Prescott will represent District 9 in Class 2B regional baseball tournaments next weekend after finishing first, second, and third, respectively, in a district tripleheader Saturday at Borleske Stadium.

The Irish claimed the district crown with a 5-2 triumph over Asotin, which earned the No. 2 spot with a 7-6 nipping of the Tigers in Saturday's finale.

W-P started the day with a 4-2, loser-out win over Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia.

DeSales will return to Borleske Stadium for one of four regional tourneys scheduled for next weekend.

Both Asotin and Waitsburg-Prescott will travel for regional competition. The Panthers will be at Spokane's Shadle Park High School and the Tigers will compete on the Mossyrock High School campus.

Victor Mata and Kyle Lindgren batted in two runs apiece, and Matt Wujek added a solo home run to lift the Irish to the district championship.

Wujek's bomb, a towering shot that cleared the right-field fence, came on a 1-0 pitch from Panthers' starter Jackson Webb with one out in the first inning.

Each team scored a run in the third. Mata gave DeSales a 2-1 edge with a two-out, RBI single to center.

The Irish broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning. Mata grounded into a fielder's choice that resulted in the first run and Lindgren scored the latter two with a bloop single to right.

Asotin tallied its final run in the sixth.

Mata, who walked seven, labored through six innings and was relieved by Pat Richard in the seventh.

"It was important for him to get out of the sixth inning without giving up any more runs," said DeSales coach Kim Cox, whose team improved to 18-3 on the season. "It was a matter of him locating a couple of pitches.

"We were pleased with our guys," Cox said. "Webb is a good pitcher and Asotin is a good team. We were pleased with our preparation all week long."

Asotin 7, W-P 6

Dusty Lyons ripped a walk-off, RBI double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to break the Tigers' hearts.

W-P scored three times in the visitors' half of frame seven to knot the score at 6-6. The Tigers were aided by Tre Brannock's two-RBI double and three of seven Panthers' errors in the game.

Asotin scored four runs on five hits in the first inning against W-P pitcher Zach Bartlow. It added single runs in the second and fifth. The second-inning tally came on a Riley Spooner inside-the-park home run, one of four hits he stroked in the contest.

Waitsburg-Prescott scored in the second on a David Brock RBI two-bagger, and tallied twice in the fifth inning. Dalton Estes delivered the first run in the fifth with a single.

"Zach settled in and threw real well after the second inning," W-P coach Dustin Snedigar said. "We've worked hard on putting the ball in play. We shortened up and put the ball in play with two strikes.

"We had one bad inning," Snedigar said. "I'm pleased with the way we stuck it out."

W-P 4, T-O-R 2

Joe Purdin fanned six and scattered seven hits over as many innings as the Tigers kept their season alive by eliminating the Spartans.

"He threw strike one," Snedigar said. "When he locates his curve ball, he's a difficult guy to face. He was sharp and that's what we needed."

Lucan Gerke and Bartlow had two RBIs each. Gerke's single to left-center in the first inning brought home W-P's first run. He contributed a fielder's choice in the second that gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Bartlow hammered a pair of RBI triples. The first occurred in inning two and the last was struck in the top of the sixth.

"Zach is getting better," Snedigar said. "He's seeing the ball and hitting it hard."
