Weston-McEwen takes No. 3 softball seed after districts

PENDLETON - Weston-McEwen earned the No. 3 district seed here Saturday in district softball playoff action.

The TigerScots dropped a battle with No. 2 Pilot Rock, 5-2, to open the day, but bounced back to knock off Heppner, 11-0, to claim the No. 3 seed.

The Rockets' Aimee Perrine blasted a solo home run in the home first to stake Heppner to a 1-0 lead.

The TigerScots took the lead with two in the top of the second, but Heppner got one back to send the game to the third at 2-2.

In the circles, Hayley Freske and Pilot Rock's Renee Mulcare matched goose eggs to the fifth.

"We had to play some people out of (their normal) position," W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. "We were doing the right thing, we just didn't do it like we were suppose to."

Pilot Rock is quite a hitting team," he said. "We didn't want to give in (to their hitters) and we worked around people (thus Freske's four walks)."

Freske went to work in the TigerScot circle and finished with a five-inning, one-hit shut out.

Morgan Entze is listed as day-to-day as she recovers from a head injury in practice, and could play Friday in a tentatively scheduled home playoff battle with Elgin-Imbler.
