WALLA WALLA - Adam Mathews smashed a triple and two singles Sunday afternoon at Ray Lane as the Walla Walla Black Sox 14-and-under summer baseball team pounded out a 14-5 victory over the Yakima Stingers.
It was the second outing of the day for the Inland Cellular-sponsored team, which opened its season earlier Sunday with a 5-4 victory over East Wenatchee.
The Black Sox take a 2-0 mark into next Sunday's home doubleheader against Ephrata. The first game is slated for 10 a.m. at Ray Lane Field.
Spencer Locati, Tim Caudill, Darryl Galloway and Joe Duehn had two hits each as the Black Sox buried the Stingers with a 13-hit offensive onslaught. Locati, Caudill and Duehn each had a double while Duehn stole three bases and Locati and Eric Klicker added two thefts each.
The Black Sox managed just five hits against East Wenatchee, one each by Galloway, Adam Eskil, Ali Buentello, Ruben Avalos and Salomon Arellano. Duehn also had a stolen base in the game.
"It was good to get a couple of wins to open the season," Black Sox coach Mike Postlewait said. "But we have a lot of work ahead of us, both on the defensive and offensive sides of the game.
"Our starting pitchers need to do a better job of locating their pitches, but they will get there. And we were happy with our approaches at the plate against the Stingers."
