LA GRANDE, Ore. - Mac-Hi and La Grande divvied up a Greater Oregon League softball doubleheader here Saturday, with the Pioneers eking out a 4-3 victory in the first game and the Tigers riding a seven-run fifth inning to an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap.
The split leaves the Pioneers with third place in the final GOL standings and a berth in the Oregon Class 4A state playoffs. Mac-Hi travels to Yamhill-Carlton on Friday for a loser-out playoff game. The winner of that contest advances to the round of 16 and a Tuesday battle at Central of Monmouth.
The Pioneers collected eight hits in Saturday's first-game victory, including two by Kalyn Odman. It was an Odman double that drove home the go-ahead run for Mac-Hi in the seventh inning.
Mac-Hi piled up 12 hits in the second game, including two each by Andrea Roeder, Stephanie Baker, Shawney Garcia and Karli Cortez. Baker and Garcia had doubles in the game, and Baker, Garcia and Roeder finished with three hits each on the day.
Mac-Hi's playoff game against Yamill-Carlton will be a rematch. The teams met at Mac-Hi during spring break and Yamhill Carlton came away with a 5-1 victory.
"This should be a great matchup again," Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. "Yamhill throws a lot of junk with a lot of movement, so our hitters are going to have to be disciplined at the plate.
"But this is a game we believe we can win."
