Dayton golfer Molly Payne qualifies for 2B state tourney

Molly Payne's 197 is good for third at the district tournament at Columbia Point as she is lone area representative to next week's state competition at Tri-Cities Country Club.

RICHLAND - Dayton's Molly Payne was the only area girl to qualify for the Class 2B state tournament after District 9 golf play at Columbia Point Tuesday.

Payne placed third, shooting 95-102-197.

Tri-City Prep's Samantha Pegram was medalist, shooting 99-95-194.

The top six finishers earned spots at the state round, which is at the Tri-Cities Country Club next week.

DeSales golfer Ashton Montgomery missed out by one placing. She hit 110-115-225 for seventh place and is an alternate.

"She held her ground, but she couldn't get in the top six," said DeSales coach Lon Olson.

Montgomery is a freshman, as is Kelly Martin (125-126-236), the other DeSales girl at districts.

"For freshmen, that was a very good showing," Olson said. "They've both brought their scores down all year, and improved their putting from last week until this week ... There was lots of encouragement for next year, I think."

The top six girls carded between 194 and 211, Olson said.

"They were pretty packed in there," he said.

Dayton's other scores were Abby Chapman (117-118-235) and Kaylee Lytle (120-116-236).

There were 14 girls at the district tournament.

Rain storms in the area cleared off before golfing started in earnest Tuesday, Olson said.

"We lucked out with weather again," he said. "It quit raining right after we teed off. We did have to put up with some breezes, and it affected their shots a little bit, but not as bad as rain would've."

Tri-Cities Prep finished first with 75 points, qualifying four of the six girls to state.

Dayton finished with a tie for second at 41 points and one qualifier.

St. John-Endicott tied with Dayton and had the last qualifier.

Asotin scored 22 points for fourth, DeSales was fifth with 21 points and Liberty-Christian sixth with eight points.

Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia did not qualify and Pomeroy has no girl golfers.

DeSales, Dayton and Pomeroy golfers will return to the Tri-Cities next week for the state round.

Montgomery will join three boys from DeSales and Payne will join another Bulldog on the course. Two boys from Pomeroy are also going.

"I think we'll be pretty well represented," said Olson of the Irish's state showing. "We'll see what happens next week."
