Wa-Hi's Peck, Cummings advance to tennis regionals

Presley Peck and Tianna Cummings team up to take second at the district tournament Monday.

WENATCHEE - Wa-Hi's girls doubles tennis team of Presley Peck and Tianna Cummings placed second in the Big Nine district tournament here Monday.

Cummings and Peck lost to district champions Demie Warner and Ali Welch of Kamiakin, who are also defending state champions.

Wenatchee won the overall tournament.

Peck and Cummings led the Wa-Hi team to a fifth-place finish overall. Wa-Hi finished tied for eighth with Moses Lake in singles play.

"Presley's and Tianna's second-place finish is higher than we have had in the program for almost a decade," said Wa-Hi coach Keven Peck. "They can be very proud of their accomplishment. The girls will take the experience they gained over the weekend and apply it to the regional tournament this Friday and Saturday. The girls are excited to see new competition and test their skills against the best in our region."

The weekend competition had hot weather and several players had heat stroke in the high temperatures, coach Peck said. But no Wa-Hi girls were affected, he said.

"It was hot Saturday, and there were long waits between matches," Peck said. "It makes it very difficult to get into a rhythm."

Peck and Cummings won all but one match Saturday.

On Monday, after a three-hour rain delay, they played Erica DeMond and Megan DeMond, defeating them 7-6 (15-13), 2-6, 6-2.

This was the third time Peck and Cummings defeated the DeMond sisters.

"The accomplishment is even greater because this is the third time we have faced the DeMond sisters this season, and the third time we have knocked them off," Peck said. "Anyone who has been in athletics long enough knows how hard it is to beat someone three times in a row. There were some rough spots in the match, but Presley and Tianna found a way to compose themselves and battle as a team."
