Mary A. Stewart, 84899 Eastside Road, Milton-Freewater, Ore., passed away May 19, 2010, at her daughter's home at the age of 94 years. Funeral services will be Friday, May 21, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater with Pastors Quinton and Sandra Kimbrow officiating. Concluding services and interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the M-F Junior Show through the funeral home.
Mrs. Stewart was born July 14, 1915, in Beardwell, Neb., the daughter of Robert M. and Olive E. Lattin Cunningham. She grew up and attended school in Beardwell. On May 6, 1931, she married Henry C. "Hank" Stewart in Belmont, Neb. The couple lived in Nebraska for a time before moving to Seattle. In the mid-1930s they moved to Milton-Freewater. She worked for numerous local grocery stores for many years. Mrs. Stewart had managed a flower shop for five years. After she retired, she worked for a year as hostess and cashier at Wong's Restaurant. She had also managed Ace Hardware for a year before it was sold. Mrs. Stewart then worked for five years at St. Mary Medical Center. She ran the Mary Stewart Craft Show for 25 years with Al Weis. She was awarded the Golden Pioneer Award in 2004 from the M-F Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed 17 years of community service for the M-F Senior Center. Mrs. Stewart enjoyed doing crafts (mostly flower arrangements), playing bingo and pinochle. She was a 60-year member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and a member of the M-F Senior Center. Mr. Stewart preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1996, and a son Robert in 1934.
She is survived by a son, Richard "Dick" Stewart of College Place, Wash., three daughters, Cheryl Beck and Barbara Wagner both of Pendleton, Ore., Twila Copeland of Milton-Freewater, Ore., 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
