WALLA WALLA - The Park & Recreation Department is now enrolling for its summer programs, which include several new youth activities this year.
Among the new sports programs a week-long Whitman College Multi-Sports Camp, where kids can learn about basketball, soccer, volleyball and tennis from college coaches.
Also new this year is an afternoon tennis academy for youths 10-14 and 14-18. It will focus on upper-level competitive playing, where participants play three days a week for two weeks. Each two-week session is $75.
Along with polishing sports skills, kids will be able to polish some masterpieces as several new art classes are offered for the first time this summer. They include a week-long afternoon Critter Creations Class, as well as some one-day art classes at the Carnegie Arts Center.
"We had a huge amount of people wanting more of the creative workshops for kids where they could go and create without having a lot of rules, and this is our answer to that," Parks & Recreation Coordinator Angela Potts said.
The pottery studio will offer several new ceramic sculptures to paint, including a birdbath and a plaque. In addition, a special 3-D Shadow Box Memory Photo Holder class is already half-full and expected to sell out soon, Potts said.
Kids and adults will also be offered several gardening classes.
Other new adult classes include a pet communications class, which teaches pet owners how body language, sound, talking and pheromones help to communicate with pets. And for the first time the department offer a basic Chinese language class.
An adult tennis class with also be taught, with class size limited to 12 students; racquets can be provided.
Potts added that no children's programs had to be cut from last year, but a few adult programs were dropped due to a lack of interest. They included adult vegetarian cooking classes and the digital photography classes.
