SEATTLE (AP) -- A Walla Walla Union-Bulletin reporter took first place and three other staffers also placed in the 2009 Society of Professional Journalists' Pacific Northwest Excellence in Journalism competition.
The competition is open to print, broadcast and online journalists in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. It covers the 2009 calendar year.
The awards were announced during awards banquets in Seattle and Portland on Saturday evening.
Reporter Alfred Diaz won the competition for Short Feature Story with an article about a local pow-wow. Wire editor Catherine J. Hicks took second place in headline writing and photographers Matthew B. Zimmerman and Jeff Horner each placed third, Zimmerman in feature photography and Horner for photopage.
