Edward James Valencsin, 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 20, 2010, in Portland, Ore. The rosary will be recited in his honor at Herring Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at 6 p.m. with Father Pat Kerst of St. Patrick Catholic Church officiant. Memorial funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at 10 a.m. with Father Pat Kerst of St. Patrick Catholic Church celebrant.

Ed was born March 1, 1935, in Yakima. His parents were Edward S. and Isabelle Coogan Valencsin. Ed attended school in Yakima and Walla Walla before graduating from St. Patrick High School with the class of 1953. He attended Gonzaga University and served in the U.S. Army in Schweinfurt, Germany. Ed met Loraine Huff in 1944. The couple were married in June 1957.

A man of entrepreneurial spirit, Ed enjoyed owning and operating Valencsin Electric for over 25 years. He was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and served on the Parish Council. Ed was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Michael Flohr Council 766. For 25 years, Ed enjoyed serving as a volunteer for the Walla Walla Balloon Stampede and found working with friends in the Walla Walla Community one of the greatest opportunities of his life. When he took time for himself, Ed's favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing with friends and family. After ending his electrical contracting business, Ed worked for Doyle Electric from 1988-1998, and retired in 2002. Throughout his lifetime, Ed's greatest joys were his Catholic faith, his friends, and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Loraine; three daughters, Janice Millican and her husband Bob of Spokane, Catherine Duffy and her husband Paul of Bellevue, and Mary Ellen Valencsin of Walla Walla; one son, Mark Valencsin of Yankton, S.D.; one sister, Joanne Brinker and husband Bob of Milton-Freewater. Ed was very proud of his 12 grandchildren, Caleb, Keegan, Corey, Ethan and Jared Millican, Laura, David, Daniel and Andrea Duffy, Caitlin, Steven and Lauren Valencsin; great-grandson, Jaxon Millican. Ed also loved and was supported by his numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Debbie Valencsin; son, Nicholas Valencsin; and brother, David "Nick" Valencsin.
