Dale Sornson

Oct. 24, 1920 - May 18, 2010

Dale Sornson passed away on May 18, 2010, after courageously battling lung cancer for two years. He was 89 years old.

He was born Oct. 24, 1920, at home in rural Waitsburg to James Isaac and Margaret (Perkins) Sornson. He married Betty Killion in 1945, and shortly thereafter left to serve in the armed forces stationed in the Philippines. Upon returning home, the couple lived in Dixie and then Walla Walla and had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary shortly before she died in 2007.

Dale grew up loving anything mechanical. In his younger years, he was an appliance repairman but retired from the Veteran's Administration Medical Center where he was the maintenance mechanic foreman. His latest challenge, in the last two years, was to install a solar cell energy system at his home. He was always willing to lend his expertise to install, maintain and operate the sound system in addition to repairing almost anything mechanical that needed repairing at Amazing Grace Nazarene Church during his many years of membership there. His neighbors are quick to recall many instances of his ability to solve all kinds of mechanical problems.

He is survived by his three daughters, Carol (Jeanne) Bartlow of Nampa, Idaho, Sally Diller of Salem, Ore., Susan Cross of Vancouver, Wash.; seven grandchildren and nine and a half great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty, his grandson, Jeremy Diller, his two sisters, Beulah Katsel and Myrtle Anderson and his brother, Vayerl Sornson.

Viewing visitation will be held Thursday, May 27, 2010, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Friday, May 28, 2010, from 9 a.m. until noon, at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Friday, May 28, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Amazing Grace Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Ron Alexander officiating. The Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. at Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Walla Walla Community Hospice or Nazarene Compassionate Ministries through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362.
