Disaster plans for Walla Walla region up for review

Comments are sought on local hazard-mitigation plans, which will be the subject of a workshop Thursday.

WALLA WALLA -- Disaster plans will be on display Thursday and public comments are invited.

Walla Walla County officials and others will host an open house on draft plans to deal with severe storms, earthquakes, floods and other hazards. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the Rural Fire District 4 station, 2251 S. Howard St.

The plans are intended to guide local officials on projects that could help mitigate the effects of disasters on lives and property. Along with unincorporated areas, the plans also involve the cities of College Place, Walla Walla, Waitsburg and Prescott.

Along with the county, agencies taking part include fire districts, irrigation districts, utility companies, Walla Walla Public Schools, the Mill Creek Flood Control Zone District and federal agencies, Ernst said in a release.

The plans will be submitted to the state Emergency Management Division and Federal Emergency Management Agency in June.

Information is available at from Lauren Prentice at the county Community Development Department, 524-2610.
