Walla Walla Sweets add depth to roster

WALLA WALLA - The Walla Walla Sweets continue to tweak the roster as Opening Day approaches, adding depth to the pitching staff and the outfield.

Zachary Clanton, a right-handed pitcher from Lewis-Clark State; Curtis Dupart, a pitcher and outfielder originally from Woodinville, Wash., and on his way to Washington State University; Kody Young, a right-handed pitcher from Columbia Basin College; Christian Ramirez, an outfielder from UC-Irvine; and Andy Mathews, an outfielder from Lewis-Clark State and a former Walla Walla Community College Warrior, have all been signed to contracts.

Mathews and Young are signed to 10-day contracts, while Clanton, Dupart and Ramirez are signed to full-year offers.

"We are excited to bring these players to Walla Walla," said Sweets general manager Zachary Fraser. "All come from fantastic programs and add depth to our roster, especially with the amount of players that we have that will arrive late due to collegiate post-season play."

Some injuries and roster changes necessitated late roster moves, as John Rohde (L-C State) and B.J. Sieverding (St. Joseph's) are both unable to play this summer.

Dupart was a member of the Seattle Times All-Star team in 2006, and was ranked as the No. 93 rated high school player in the country by Baseball America while at Woodinville. Drafted in the 31st round by the Colorado Rockies in 2006, he elected to attend Georgia Tech University instead, one of the top collegiate programs in the country. After battling injuries, he is transferring closer to home and is slated to join the Cougars in the fall .

Clanton, a product of Lake City had a strong freshman year at L-C State, where he was second on the team in appearances (17) and opponents only hit .226 against him. This past season, the sophomore is 2-0 with a 3.63 ERA in 15 appearances.

The Sweets, an expansion franchise in the West Coast League, opens up the 2010 season by hosting defending league champion Wenatchee AppleSox at Borleske Stadium on June 8. For more information, see website www.wallawallasweets.com.
