Native Walla Wallan, Beryl M. (Young) Henderson passed away May 25, 2010, at the age of 96.

She was born Oct. 6, 1913, in Walla Walla to Chester G. Opal Oldaker Young. After attending Walla Walla schools, she married; from this union, two children, Nancy and Jerry, were born.

In 1947, she married the love of her life, J. Harold Henderson at Central Christian Church. For many years prior, Beryl was a member of Pioneer Methodist and taught nursery school there for 20 years. She was currently a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She spent many years active in Eastern Star. Early in her marriage, she worked at Drumhellers and Davis-Kaser.

For the past eight years, Mrs. Henderson resided at Garrison Creek Lodge, where she gained many friends. The staff, nurses, caregivers, etc. continued to care for her after she suffered a stroke May 10. The family wishes to express their gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff at Garrison Creek for their loving care and support. Thanks also go to Walla Walla Community Hospice.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Opal Young; sister, Dora Schreiner; and brothers, Ches and Leland Young.

She is survived by daughter Nancy Corkrum (Richard) of Marina, Calif., and son, Jerry Kirk (Gwen) of Kennewick, Wash. She also leaves five grandchildren, Karleen Corkrum, Spokane; Denise Williams (Roy), Lacey, Wash.; Cindy Van Velzer (Eric), San Marcos, Calif.; Susan Dawson (Rick), Pasco, Wash.; and Gregory Kirk (Phuong), Pasco, Wash. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Chad, Joshua, Cameron, Justin, Amanda, Ryan, Tommie and Alex; and one great-great-grandchild, Justin.

Viewing and visitation will be held at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home on Sunday, May 30, 2010, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 1, 2010, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at the Chapel of the Herring Funeral Home with interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Aid Center or Walla Walla Community Hospice through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362.
