County coroner candidate Richard Greenwood receives a hug before departing the elections headquarters Tuesday evening.

WALLA WALLA - Walla Walla County has a new coroner.

Richard Greenwood is the apparent winner of the two-way race with 53.5 percent of the ballots cast. His opponent, Virginia Romine, finished second with 44.4 percent of the vote.

Greenwood and Romine both ran as Republicans and were the top two finishers in the August primary. The winner will replace incumbent Coroner Frank Brown, who was eliminiated after finishing fourth in the earlier race.

The 55-year old Greenwood is currently employed with Basin Disposal of Walla Walla. A Walla Walla native, he has been a farmer and also worked in private industry, including the food processing industry.

Greenwood will take office in January, succeeding Brown who has held the coroner's office since first being appointed in 2004 to the position after Coroner Steve Ames retired before the end of his term.
