Greenwood wins Walla Walla County coroner race

Richard Greenwood defeated Virginia Romine and will take over Coroner Frank Brown's position.

WALLA WALLA -- Walla Walla County has a new coroner.

Richard Greenwood is the apparent winner of the two-way race with 6,120 votes, or about 55 percent, of the ballots cast. His opponent, Virginia Romine, finished second with 5,079 votes, about 45 percent of the vote.

Greenwood and Romine both ran as Republicans and were the top two finishers in the August primary. Greenwood will replace incumbent Coroner Frank Brown, who was eliminated after finishing fourth in the earlier race.

The 55-year old Greenwood is currently employed with Basin Disposal of Walla Walla. A Walla Walla native, he has been a farmer and also worked in private industry, including the food processing industry.

Greenwood will take office in January, succeeding Brown, who has held the coroner's office since being appointed in 2004 after Coroner Steve Ames retired before the end of his term.
