PREP FOOTBALL — Waitsburg-Prescott doesn't let up in playoff rout

W-P defeats Oroville 49-13 to play DeSales again next weekend.

Waitsburg-Prescott receiver T.J. Hofer hangs on to a Zach Bartlow touchdown pass despite the efforts of Oroville's Tanner Smith. The clutch play came late in the second quarter and moved the score to 29-0 after the kick.

WAITSBURG - Quarterback Zach Bartlow completed 15-of-22 passes for 205 yards and five touchdowns, and Waitsburg-Prescott scored on its first five possessions during a 49-13 victory over Oroville in the opening round of the Class 2B state football playoffs on Saturday night.

Wide receiver T.J. Hofer caught six of Bartlow's throws for 85 yards and tallied twice.

W-P, which improved to 11-0 on the season, will oppose league-rival DeSales in a quarterfinal matchup next weekend.

The Irish kept their season alive Saturday with a 33-7 triumph at Brewster.

Waitsburg-Prescott's defense made an early statement by forcing a three-and-out on the initial series of the game. Oroville lost eight rushing yards on those three snaps.

Following a 5-yard punt, W-P started its first possession of the night on the Hornets' 30 yard-line. Five plays later, Bartlow hit Hofer from 13 yards out at the 7:05 mark of quarter one.

Hofer ran in the 2-point conversion to give W-P an 8-0 lead.

After a fourth-down stop in Hornet territory, Waitsburg-Prescott drove 36 yards for its second touchdown - a Bartlow-to-Dalton Estes toss of 15 yards with 3:21 left in the period.

Bartlow picked off a Preston Iverson pass on the Hornets' first offensive play after the ensuing kickoff and returned it 29 yards to the Oroville 3.

Kris Cady cashed in the Bartlow pick on the next play from scrimmage with a touchdown run that increased the W-P lead to 22-0 with 2:42 left in the first.

The Hornets ended the quarter with only 16 yards of total offense - all on the ground.

"The defense set the tone," W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. "The kids executed what we wanted to do."

Bartlow hooked up with Hofer for a 21-yard score that closed out an eight-play, 57-yard drive with 7:28 remaining in the second quarter and Justin Armstrong crashed in from 1 yard out at the 5:01 mark of period two.

Waitsburg-Prescott took a 35-0 lead into halftime.

A pair of scoring strikes from Bartlow - 3 yards to Estes and 39 yards to Cady - in the third quarter concluded W-P's scoring for the night.

Cady caught three passes for 57 yards while Estes, Dustin Wooderchak and Anthony Powell grabbed two passes apiece for a combined 63 yards.

"We got to mix it up offensively," coach Bartlow said. "A lot of different guys caught the ball. Zach spread it around.

"On film, they brought all kinds of pressure," coach Bartlow said of the Hornets. "The ‘O' line and our running backs did good things to get that squared up."

Now a rematch with DeSales is next for W-P, who beat the Irish, 27-14, on Sept. 30 in Waitsburg.

"They're going to be a great second-round opponent," coach Bartlow said. "It's going to be tough. It's always tough."
