WALLA WALLA -- Two units at Washington State Penitentiary are on lockdown after a fight between inmates Sunday.

The fight began about 3:30 p.m. in the entry area of Golf unit, one of four close-custody facilities in the penitentiary's West Complex. Shari Hall, prison spokeswoman, said the fight started as prisoners were returning from outdoor recreation and escalated to include more than 40 inmates.

No significant injuries were reported, Hall said. Along with Golf unit, the adjacent Fox unit -- each has 187 prisoners -- was also placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure. Both units remain on lockdown today and the cause of the fight remains under investigation, Hall said.

The rest of the prison facility is on normal status today.
