BURBANK - The Columbia School District in Walla Walla County is among 21 school districts in the state to receive state energy grants during the third and final round of the awards.
The district secured $563,195 that will go to offset a variety of energy-efficiency projects, to include lighting upgrades and heating and cooling improvements. Districts are required to contribute matching dollars to the projects as part of the awards.
The grants were administered by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and totaled $7.6 million in the final round. In a statement, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn said only about half of the grants that were sought could be awarded because of a highly competitive applicant pool.
Money for the grants came through the 2010 Washington State Supplemental Capital Budget, which set aside $50 million to the state education agency and the Department of Commerce for energy improvements.
