PREP FOOTBALL - Mac-Hi football continue strong showing with victory over Umatilla

Mac-Hi smacks Umatilla, 35-0, for its third victory of the season behind 317 rushing yards.

MILTON FREEWATER - Mac-Hi's football team continued it strong 2010 campaign with another run-oriented victory, dropping Umatilla 35-0 at home Friday in its Homecoming game.

For the second consecutive week, the Pioneers compiled more than 300 yards on the ground and got triple-digit rushing performances from senior running backs Josh Rutherford and Jordan Jensen, who finished with 150 and 104 yards, respectively.

"It starts with our line, but the guys in our backfield were great tonight, also," said Mac-Hi head coach Chuck Pease. "This was an all-around team effort. We have a lot of respect for the program Umatilla has, so this win means a lot to us."

Rutherford opened the scoring with a 23-yard dash to the end zone with 6:55 on the clock in the first quarter.

Quarterback Francisco Saldana posted the Pioneers' second score with a 4-yard scramble to give Mac-Hi a 14-0 cushion at the half despite being outgained by the Vikings in the opening 24 minutes.

"Overall, we played really good defense," Pease said. "Our effort was outstanding, and we buckled down when we needed to."

Saldana found the end zone again at the 8:11 mark in the third to make it a three-score contest on a 16-yard run that effectively put the game out of reach for the run-heavy Vikings.

"We're a team that wants to go the distance, and tonight we kept up a high level of play for all four quarters," Pease said. "Our guys paid attention to the little things, and I think you can see their confidence growing every week."

Mac-Hi notched a pair of lengthy scores in the final frame with Jones running 63 yards to pay dirt and Rutherford picking up his second score on a 59-yard jaunt.

The win completed a perfect three-game homestand for the Pioneers, who are now 3-2 on the season.

"We are accomplishing the things that we set out to do going all the way back to camp," Pease said. "We're finding the balance in the simple things and getting done what we need to do."

Up next for Mac-Hi is a trip to Medical Lake on Friday.

"It's been a long time since our program has been at this level," Pease said. "We have a lot to be proud of tonight, and we know we're headed in the right direction."
