POMEROY - It is often said that the football season is a marathon, not a sprint.

But Friday night a marathon game turned into a night of sprints to the end zone.

For the second consecutive week, the Pirates (3-3, 2-1) posted 70 points in a victory, dropping Lacrosse-Washtucna (2-4, 1-2), 70-50, at home.

It was a record-setting night for Pomeroy in its first meeting with the Tigercats since 1988 as the teams posted the highest-scoring game in Pomeroy 8-man football history.

"It was a crazy game," said Pomeroy head coach Scott McGee. "We were able to get out on them early and keep at it."

The Pirates pounded the Tigercats on the ground, amassing 476 yards rushing, led by 296 yards from junior running back Tory Knebel and 142 from sophomore Austin Reisdorph.

Knebel notched the first score of the night when he darted 26-yards to pay dirt to give the Pirates an 8-0 lead at the 8:46 mark. Reisdorph added another lengthy strike when he burst through a hole to run 36 yards for the team's second score before Knebel continued the duo's version of anything-you-can-do-I-can-better running with a 45-yard gallop to make it 24-0 less than eight minutes into the game.

"We have some amazing running backs," McGee said. "Still, you've got to give a lot of credit to our line. There was some great blocking out there tonight that made all of this possible."

Lacrosse-Washtucna was never able to get the lead back to single digits despite a prolific passing night from junior quarterback Aune, who threw for 293 yards and five touchdowns, including four to senior wideout Jeff Zimmer, who topped the century mark in receiving yardage.

"That kid (Aune) can throw, that's for sure," McGee said. "It was kind of their passing game against our running game, which we knew coming in. We've seen defensive schemes similar to theirs, so we kind of knew what to expect. Clearly, they made adjustments, but so did we."

Again, showing no desire to toil in the red zone, Knebel notched another lengthy TD-run early in the second quarter, running 33 yards to make it 30-8 before he busted a 44-yarder to cap Pomeroy's first half scoring, allowing the team to take a 38-20 spread into intermission.

"You don't see a game like the one he had every night," McGee said. "We have a lot of plays in our system, but on nights like this one you kind of go with what you think will work, and you hope you're right."

The Knebel and Reisdorph show continued in the second half with Reisdorph pushing his way into the end zone from 2 yards out before Knebel bolted 75 yards on a kickoff return that effectively ended the evening for the Tigercats.

Pomeroy looks to continue its torrid offensive pace back at home Friday when the Pirates welcome Garfield-Palouse.

"You enjoy nights like these," McGee said. "Still, next time we take the field it's 0-0 again, and we have to start fresh and be ready to put forward the effort that we showed tonight."
