Whitworth wins Whitman College Invitational at Wine Valley

WALLA WALLA - Yutaro Sakamoto and Alex Fitch, playing for Linfield College, finished first and second in the individual scoring but it was Whitworth University taking the team title by a single stroke as the Whitman College Invitational came to a close Sunday at the Wine Valley Golf Club west of Walla Walla.

Whitworth carded a 299 team score Sunday to finish with a 36-hole total of 591. Linfield had Sunday's low team score (along with Pacific) at 295 to take second with a 592 total.

Rounding out the top five in the eight-school field were Pacific Lutheran 305-296 601, Pacific 313-295 608, and Whitman 305-313 618.

Sakamoto won medalist honors with a 139 total for his two rounds. Fitch was second at 143 while Whitworth's Christian Boudreau and Corey Meyers finished in a third-place tie at 145.

Pacific's Max Bonk and Pacific Lutheran's Dustin Hegge finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at 146 and 147.

Whitman sophomore Geoff Burks paced the host team, shooting his second consecutive 75 on Sunday to tie for seventh at 150 with Pacific's Joshua Mau.

Other players for host Whitman were senior Brian Barton 75-78 153, freshman Jon Standen 79-79 158, freshman Andrew Welch 76-82 158, sophomore Eli Smith 80-81 161, and senior Max Rausch 79-84 163.

The Northwest Conference men's golf season concludes for the fall semester next weekend at the NWC Fall Classic at Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore.
