Walla Walla chapter of Altrusa International, Inc., sponsored a six-week summer Reading Skills Lab that graduated 21 primary-grade students who read 376 children's books.

The children worked weekday mornings for 1not;? hours reading one-on-one to tutors, writing with teacher Eloise Phillips, and practicing phonic skills with teacher Barbara Daniel. Those interested in tutoring for summer 2011 may call 525-1376 for more information.

For the past several years the local chapter has partnered with Department of Social and Health Services staffers to gather schools supplies and backpacks for children in the community, lessening the costs many struggling families simply can't afford, said Altrusa member Chris Connerly.

The backpacks contain supplies according to each child's grade and some lists had particular requests, such as a pink backpack for a kindergarten girl. This year, DSHS had requests for 45-plus children, more than doubling last year's number.

DSHS met its goal, Chris said, but may still have some late and ongoing requests as students move into the area.

Items can be donated to Altrusa to make certain local children attend school with needed basic supplies. Contact Pam Winter at 524-2929 for more details.
