Walla Walla schools win federal energy grant

WALLA WALLA -- The Department of Commerce has awarded Walla Walla Public Schools with a $350,000 energy grant that will go to make improvements at Pioneer Middle School, the district recently announced.

Energy improvements at the school will include new heat pumps and cooling system upgrades, as well as installing energy-efficient lights.

The entire project is expected to cost $868,000, with the district contributing about $518,000 to match the grant. Those funds were part of the unused $1.6 million from the bond collected to rebuild Edison Elementary.

The district estimates the upgrades will save about $14,000 a year in lower utility rates.
