Wallula woman dies in Highway 12 vehicle collision

BURBANK - A 90-year old woman died today after the vehicle she was in rear-ended a tractor-trailer.

Washington State Police said Mildred A. Riley of Wallula was fatally injured in the 9:22 a.m. accident on U.S. Highway 12 at Humorist Road in Burbank.

Riley was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Elmer N. Riley, 90, also of Wallula. Police said the Rileys' vehicle was westbound on Highway 12 when it struck the rear of the tractor-trailer as it was stopped on the highway at Humorist Road for a traffic light.

Elmer Riley was injured and was taken to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland. His condition was not available this afternoon. The driver of the truck, Jerman Pimentel, 31, of Quincy, was not injured, police said.

The accident remained under investigation today.

The collision was the second injury accident involving a car and tractor-trailer this week. On Monday, a car eastbound on Highway 12 failed to stop for a red light and collided with a tractor-trailer attempting to turn into the westbound lanes of the highway where it intersects with State Route 124.

The driver of the car was treated and released and the passenger was hospitalized after being taken to hospitals in the Tri-Cities.
